We asked her about packing essentials that made her trip memorable and comfortable.

Meet Krystel

Krystel has always considered herself a cyclist—on both road and dirt. In recent years, she’s pushed into new territory with ultra-distance running, trail running, and Nordic skiing. For her, it’s all about testing limits. Now, as a new mom, she’s passionate about inspiring other mothers to find their own ways to stay active and adventurous with little ones.

Bikepacking is a physical undertaking that takes a lot of preparation and care if you want to see the journey through from the moment you step on the peddles, until your bike is back on its rack. But first, what is bikepacking? It’s, well… backpacking, only with the added element of cycling. But this not-so-small addition to your gear adds several new factors to how you prepare. When it comes to bikepacking, every ounce counts.

Table of Contents

Questions That’ll Determine Your Approach

Where am I going? Who am I going with? What’s the geography and weather like? Are there amenities to fall back on?

To ensure you pack the correct gear, consider these key questions—but don’t let this planning phase discourage you. Bikepacking is an accessible sport for just about everybody. Krystel was in her third month of pregnancy when she and her husband went into Central Asia to embark on their cycling journey, suffering inclement weather from hail to rain and crossing the uneven and mountainous terrain of Kyrgyzstan.

We’ll cover essential packing items and Krystel’s top gear choices for a comfortable bikepacking experience, guaranteeing a memorable trip, regardless of whether it’s your first or next.

The Bikepacking Essentials

Sleep & Shelter

Tent

To reiterate, every ounce counts. For this reason, you’ll want to opt for a 3-season ultralight tent that’s durable, weather-resistant, and easy to set up.

The Big Agnes 3-season is a trusted classic for backcountry and front country campers alike. It features robust recycled fabrics and a waterproof finish without the intentionally added PFAS, making it both great on weather-resistance and the environment. Krystel and her husband found quick shelter during a hailstorm their first night, all thanks to the tent’s simple setup. Plus, a tent with an easy setup allows the opportunity for midday naps.

Mattress

Getting enough sleep allows your body to recover and prepare for the next day. For a comfortable sleep, a sleeping mat is key.

Inflation is quick and easy with 3 full shots of the inflatable bag, eliminating the need for your breath or a pump. Another key feature is its internal separator. It reduces disturbance from restless sleepers and provides customizable firmness options.

Sleeping Bag

Selecting a sleeping bag requires careful consideration of several key factors, including temperature rating, insulation type, and packability. Pregnant and bikepacking at high altitudes, Krystel needed something lightweight, warm, and well-cushioned for optimal comfort.

Rab’s Mythic Ultra 360 Sleeping Bag prioritizes weight reduction without compromising on the warmth and comfort provided by its Thermo Ionic Lining and 900 fill power RDS-certified goose down. Even during the day, Krystel used her sleeping bag as a blanket to relax because of its exceptional comfort and warmth.

It might seem frivolous, but we can’t stress sleep enough. A packable pillow can improve your sleep quality, so it makes our list.

Clothing Layers

Merino Base Layers

You likely know the 3-layer system: a base layer to wick moisture, an insulating mid-layer, and a weatherproof outer shell. To regulate her body temperature and wick away moisture, Krystel wore merino wool base layers, including a t-shirt and long-sleeve top. Plus, the odour-resistant nature of merino wool is convenient when you’re far from the reach of a laundromat. Krystel also brought along merino socks, as well as a Buff merino neckwear.

Cycling Bib

You can’t expect to head out the door for a bikepacking trip without a bib. Bibs enhance mobility, minimize chafing, and, lacking a waistband, alleviate stomach pressure, improving breathing.

This bib made Krystel’s entire trip comfortable and easy. Its comfy chamois and unrestrictive design make this bib easy to remove for bathroom breaks. The extra cargo pockets included meant Krystel always had her phone ready to photograph the amazing panoramic views.

Jacket & Pants

Outer layers are important if and when the weather takes a turn. During Krystels trip, she experienced the madness of the mountain with everything from hail to snow, and rain. For this reason, water and wind-proof jackets, as well as water-resistant pants help shield you from inclement weather, while also providing additional insulation.

The Patagonia Down Sweater Hoodie was the perfect choice to bring for its warmth-to-weight ratio. Lightweight, but with an 800 fill power of RDS-certified down and a PFC-free DWR finish makes this jacket both windproof and water-resistant.

Essential Accessories

Helmet

You can’t go bikepacking without a helmet, and you shouldn’t be cycling in general without one. Helmet-hair be damned, it’s about safety. Especially in rougher terrains where things can go wrong and there are a lot of hard surfaces.

POC is renowned for creating simplistic yet highly protective helmets that can absorb a substantial amount of shock. This helmet combines a crafted breathable and durable design, making it more comfortable to wear for longer periods of time.

Sunglasses

Crossing a mountain you can expect some mean elevation gains. At higher altitudes, the sun is stronger. When doing it on two wheels, it also means there’s more chance of kicking up debris. For this reason, a pair of sunglasses is needed to not only shield you from UV rays, but dirt, rock, or even a stray bug.

Oakley's Prizm technology is prized for crafting unique lenses that fine-tune colours and contrast to accentuate the smallest details of a terrain. Plus, their frames are designed for optimal grip and fit for comfort.

Water & Filtration

A water bottle goes without saying, however you don’t need to overthink it. For Krystel, a simple Nalgene bottle was enough for her to use for cooking and drinking and just large enough to fit on her bicycle for easy access.

What you should consider more carefully is the water filtration system. There’s one key difference between filters and purifiers: filters filter most bacteria but not viruses, while purifiers combat most bacteria and viruses. If you’re travelling to more remote or underdeveloped countries, a purifier is always the safer option. Krystel used a UV light purifier since it’s small and easy to use. The choices are many, but remember to always follow the directions and proper safety precautions.

Bikepacking Bags

Arguably the most important accessory you’ll need for a bikepacking trip. Bikepacking bags are essential for storing all your gear. Depending on the length of the legs of your journey, you’ll need to determine the right sizes.

During her week-long Kyrgyzstan trip, Krystel used two bags, distributing items between the bicycle’s front and rear. Made with durable, waterproof fabric, Arkel bags are some of the best on the market for bikepackers. The rolltop closures allow for quick and easy gear access, and attaching or reattaching them to your bike is simple. Smaller, added pockets offer easy access to snacks, a handy bonus.

GPS & Satellite Communicator

Satellite GPS devices are essential for safety when venturing into the wilderness. The InReach by Garmin and similar devices come with remarkable features like compasses, breadcrumb trails, SOS functions connected to IERCC (International Emergency Response Coordination Center), and 2-way texting to update rescue personnel or family on your whereabouts and safety. A GPS and satellite communicator can give you some much needed peace of mind; include one in your kit.

Cookware

Fuelling your body with warm meals while bikepacking is essential for both physical and mental well-being. A compact and reliable burner is a must-have for preparing hot food and beverages on the go. For bikpacking, you want to consider weight, ease of use, and how much fuel you might want to bring depending on your journey.

Krystel kept it simple with a PocketRocket from MSR. Just 2.9 oz, this ultralight stove was the perfect choice to accommodate weight restrictions. The pressure regulator can continue to boil water fast in cold weather, even with lower fuel levels. It’s easy to use and easy to store, and can prepare most meals from morning coffee to pasta dishes, and dehydrated meals.

Other Bits & Baubles

With these foundational items, you’re well on your way to planning a stellar bikepacking trip, no matter where you pedal off too. We’ve included some extra items that you should consider bringing that aren’t listed above:

 • Swim suit: whether to swim in or bathe in. Plus, it can act as an extra pair of undergarments.
 • Microfibre cloths: Bring these quick-drying cloths to help wipe away things, clean dishes, or yourself.
 • Headlamps: Convenient for getting around at night, or if you’re pushing the extra kilometres before setting up camp. Definitely a must-have.
 • First-aid kit: Don’t leave home without one.
 • Multi-tool: Useful in the wilderness.
 • Entertainment: If you’re solo-journeying in a remote area, you need to keep your mind busy as much as your body. If you can spare the weight, bring something to do at the close of the day.

Krystel’s Tips & Tricks

Packing Tip

If you’re solo, you want to keep your tent stored at the front of your bike with your sleeping bag. If you’re travelling with a companion, this is a great chance to share the load. Have someone take the tent, while you carry the sleeping bags or vice versa.

Keep snacks close by in easy-to-access compartments of your bikepacking bags or even in your outer layers or bib for quick refuelling.

Secure Your Gear

Krystel and her husband lost their stove fuel on their first day because it wasn’t properly secured, meaning they went most of their trip eating dried ramen noodles. When you head out on your bike across uneven and bumpy terrain, double-check to make sure everything is secure.

Just Go

Planning is important, but don’t waste too much mental energy on it. Remember that material things are replaceable. Adventure is often unscripted.

Pedal Safe

Start drafting your checklist of bikepacking essentials for your next grand adventure. Remember to take time to take in the vistas, explore the local culture, and meet others. Tackle your next cycling journey with confidence, challenge yourself, but most importantly, make it memorable and fun.

Buying Guide: What to Look for in Cycling Shorts

When shopping for cycling shorts, you want to look at material, construction, and comfort. The most important factor will be how they fit your anatomy since everyone has different butts, crotches, seats, and riding positions.

It’s hard to recommend one size fits all, but we’ll give some pointers. In general, the higher the price, the higher the quality of the shorts. The more panels the better as well, as 6 to 8-panel shorts will conform to your body better. Continue reading for the specifics of what to look for in cycling shorts.

Types of Cycling Shorts

Road biking short (bib)

Bibs have built-in shoulder straps to make sure the shorts stay snug. The suspenders keep the chamois or padded liner in place to prevent irritation. Bibs can be helpful for men to make sure everything stays in place, but they also make it less convenient to urinate. Women also would have to take off their jersey and bib to go to the bathroom. However, these days bibs have click-off detachable straps for easier pit stops.

Commuter short

Commuter shorts are casual shorts that are looser than road biking shorts. They have woven stretch fabric, lots of pockets, and are better for cycling around town. They rely on the waistband to keep shorts in place and are best for casual cyclists that don’t want to wear spandex. Unpadded shorts give a better range of motion, but padded ones help prevent chafing between legs.

Mountain biking short

Known as the “Baggy” short, mountain biking shorts are rugged and loose-fitting. Some have a padded liner that reduces friction on the crotch area. Padded MTB shorts will usually be ‘2 in 1’ with a padded liner layer and a looser outer layer. They’re great not only for MTB cyclists but also for urban cyclists who want a more casual look.

Size & Length

The length of the inseam is a personal preference. Some people like 7″ or longer “Belgian style” shorts that rest just above the knee. These are better for more professional riders that participate in races, long-distance cycling, or off-road cycling.

Shorter 5″ shorts are better for bikers that don’t want an awkward tan line. If you opt for shorter shorts, just make sure they’re not so short that the nose of the saddle rubs your bare skin. Short shorts are better for commuters as they have a more casual look. Whichever length you get, the shorts should fit snug with the pad close to the skin.

Liners

Liners are popular with cyclists who want to wear their favourite cycling shorts. Liners transform any pair of shorts into cycling apparel, giving more versatility. Mesh liners usually have sewn-in chamois or padded liners. The “chamois” needs to be large enough to cover your crotch and is most comfortable when it’s moderately padded.

Briefs

Briefs are padded cycling underwear. They can be used for any high-impact sport like cycling, rowing, horseback riding, or even running. They keep everything in place, and the mesh fabric helps with cooling and ventilation.

2-in-1 Shorts

2-in-1 shorts have a loose outer shell made of nylon and an inner stretchy padded liner. They’re great if you want a casual look and mostly do commuter or urban biking. They’re longer and looser than traditional road cycling shorts, which makes them more versatile.

Fabrics

Most cycling shorts are made of a stretchy material called spandex. Others will purposefully be stretch-resistant to help you with your pedal stroke or to maximize energy. Look for a short made with at least 15% spandex and other key materials like nylon and polyester. These materials hold up against abrasion as the shorts rub against the biking seat.

Nylon shorts are more rugged while polyester is softer and more colourful. Nylon, polyester, and spandex, and other quick-drying materials are useful for sweaty rides.

Pockets

You’ll find more pockets in today’s cycling shorts to hold phones and devices. Pockets are also great for holding snacks, tissues, and other essential items.

FAQ

Can you bike in running shorts?

No, running shorts will chafe your skin when it rubs against the seat. One good solution is to wear briefs underneath running shorts to stay comfortable while cycling.

Should I wear underwear with cycling shorts?

When you’re wearing cycling shorts, it’s better to go commando. The chamois liner provides a smooth surface and prevents friction, which is undone by underwear (especially cotton).

Biking Shorts

Conclusion

Choosing the right pair of cycling shorts is a personal decision, shaped by your riding style, goals, and comfort preferences. Whether you’re commuting to work, tackling technical trails, or pushing through long-distance road rides, the right fit can make all the difference. This guide highlights top options across a range of needs, so you can ride longer, feel better, and stay focused on the road—or trail—ahead.

How To Choose The Right Road Bike Helmet

How should a bike helmet fit?

When you try on a helmet, make sure it’s level on your head and low on your forehead—the correct amount of space is two fingers above your eyebrow.

Another tip? When you’re done adjusting the straps and the turn dial, open your mouth wide as if you’re yawning. You should feel the helmet pull down on your head—if it doesn’t, tighten the chin strap. Finally, make sure that the helmet isn’t blocking your vision or rocking on your head.

Ventilation

Helmets with larger vents allow for more airflow and some helmets also have ‘exhaust’ holes in the back of the helmet. Vents and exhaust channels work to push cool air over the head and force out hot air so you stay cool when cycling long distances.

MIPS (Multi-directional impact protection)

MIPS, or Multi-directional Impact Protection System, has recently become a buzzword in the biking community. The main purpose of the technology is to reduce the ‘rotational forces’ or brain damage resulting from a crash. MIPS uses two layers that rotate independently from one another, with the outer layer rotating when you crash.

Some complaints about MIPS are that it makes the helmet feel wobbly, which makes sense given the technology. However, it’s been proven to reduce impact damage after a fall, so some minor discomfort is worth it.

SPIN (Shearing Pad INside)

POC’s SPIN pads are the most recent development in bike helmet technology. Unlike the MIPS’ rotational layer, SPIN uses far more comfortable, newly-developed silicone-gel pads inside the helmet. This technology has proven to be just as effective as MIPS.

The pads function similarly to the outer layer in MIPS helmets by absorbing the shock from an impact. The main difference is that this safety system doesn’t affect ventilation or comfort, which creates the ‘barely there’ feel.

Retention System

Though retention systems vary significantly, they all essentially function the same. An adjustable webbing system across the back of the helmet is pulled together by a ratchet dial or thumbwheel.

For example, the Boa Fit System consists of a micro-adjustable dial designed to optimize fit with a single-hand adjustment. Different brands have their retention systems, such as Occigrip from Sweet Protection, which looks similar to the Boa turn dial. The most important feature to look for in a ratchet system is that it can be easily adjusted with one hand.

FAQs

When should you replace your bike helmet?

It depends on what kind of shape the helmet is in. If you’ve been in a crash then the foam will need to be replaced. Also, age plays a big factor—after 3 years, foam begins to break away from the mold and protection deteriorates.

Do road bike helmets expire?

No. Road bike helmets don’t expire, but most manufacturers recommend replacing a helmet every 3 to 5 years. Some helmets are more durable than others and therefore last longer.

Why are some road bike helmets so expensive?

Comfort, aerodynamic vents, and built-in technology dramatically increase the price of bike helmets.

Can you use a mountain bike helmet for road biking?

Yes, if you would like to. A mountain bike helmet is less aerodynamic, but offers better protection for road biking. There will be compromises, however, in visibility (less in mountain bike helmets), weight, and other factors.

Conclusion

In 2024, most road bike helmets come standard with MIPS technology, ventilation, an easy adjustment strap system, and comfortable padding. Choose a helmet that fits your needs and your budget. You will find your dream helmet in no time, and can work on the rest of your urban cycling gear and outfit!

BUYING GUIDE: WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING CYCLING SUNGLASSES

First, you need to identify the type of cycling you’ll be doing. It can be track, BMX, mountain biking or road cycling. Once determined, you can then boil it down to the size of the sunglasses, helmet compatibility, and the lens type.

Size

It’s best to look for sunglasses in a range of different sizes to discover what fits your face shape best

 • SMALL

Oakley’s Radar EV Path Sunglasses feature a strong grip, perfect for a small face. For especially small heads or for children, the Radar EV Path also comes in a youth model.

 • ONE SIZE

There’s only one size (OS) for the Smith Optics Attack MTB Sunglasses and these cycling sunglasses tend to be on the larger size. Additionally, the Garneau Lazer Shield shades and Oakley Sutro Lite Sunglasses are also strictly available in OS.

 • LARGE

For those with a larger head, opt for cycling sunglasses that offer a size large, or whose standard OS model is somewhat larger than the competition’s, such as the POC Aim Sunglasses.

Helmet Compatibility

Helmet compatibility is often a personal choice, usually based on the size of your head. Often, the helmet pushes the sunglasses too far down the nose. Therefore, when trying on new helmets, take your sunglasses with you. Fun fact, the Garneau Lazer Shield sunglasses are compatible with the P-09 helmet.

Lenses

Lens quality is one of the most important features of cycling sunglasses. The advantages of polarized cycling sunglasses are that they avoid flashes of light and blinding reflections. They also relieve eye fatigue and are good for seeing natural colours. But some cycling purists believe polarized lenses should only be purchased if you have problems with glare and excessive light.

Cyclists are exposed to a lot of sunlight and light reflected from a different range of surfaces, so it’s best to use a darker lens. Also, if you’re most likely to cycle during summer, pick a dark lens for its luminosity.

If you’ll be cycling in winter most of the time or overcast days, go for a yellow or clear lens, ideal in low light conditions.

FAQ

Do I need to think about impact resistance sunglasses?

The very best cycling sunglasses have thicker lenses (~2mm). They offer better impact resistance than regular plastic lenses, meaning that despite the elevated price tag they’ll last you a lot longer in the field.

What is the benefit of wrap-around sunglasses?

Simply put, cycling sunglasses that wrap around your face cover a greater surface area. This prevents sunlight from seeping through, as well as wind and debris from entering your eyes.

Final Thoughts

There you have itthe best cycling sunglasses of 2024. Focus on choosing a pair of sunglasses that meets your budget, size, lens, technology, and your preferred cycling style.

For us at Altitude Sports, our top pick goes to the Oakley Sutro Lite Sweep Sunglasses. They performed exceptionally well in every category that we tested. Now it’s time for you to order your next pair of cycling shades.

See you on the bike trails!

The post 10 Essential Accessories for a Day of Fat Biking appeared first on Altitude Sports.

Fat biking excels where other bikes fail. The wide tires offer grip on ice, snow, and mud, turning impossible routes into newfound playgrounds. From deep winter excursions to rocky backcountry trails, a well-equipped fat bike ensures every ride is smooth and controlled.

But riding in especially extreme conditions—like in the dead of winter—requires you to be extra prepared. The right cold weather fat bike gear boosts comfort, enhances performance, and improves safety. Because without proper protection and tools, even a short trip can turn into a struggle. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. In this article, we dive into the must-haves for your next fat biking adventure.

1. Wide Tires with Optimal Tread

When fat biking in winter, tire width and tread depth make all the difference in maintaining control and stability on unpredictable terrain. For deeper snow and looser sand, lower pressure increases surface contact, improving grip and ride quality.

2. Portable Low-Pressure Tire Pump

Tire pressure is everything when fat biking in winter. A Lezyne Micro Floor Drive HVG allows for quick adjustments on the go, delivering the perfect balance between grip and efficiency on varying terrain. Remember, lowering tire pressure improves traction in soft snow, while increasing it enhances speed on packed trails. Also, keeping a portable pump handy lets you fine-tune your ride anywhere. For multi-day adventures, a pressure gauge helps maintain the ideal PSI for varying conditions.

3. Flat or Clipless Pedals with Grip

Slipping off pedals in the cold is a no-go. That’s where the Shimano PD-GR500 Mountain Bike Pedals come in. They offer solid grip and durability, keeping your feet stable in icy or muddy conditions. Winter-specific pedals, paired with insulated cycling boots, prevent foot fatigue and keep your ride efficient—even in extreme temps. Clipless pedal systems can provide extra security, but for many winter riders, flat pedals with aggressive pins ensure easy foot placement and removal in deep snow.

4. Insulated Hydration System

Staying hydrated is just as important in the cold as it is in the heat. In other words, dehydration can still sneak up on you when you're bundled up and pushing through deep snow. That’s why cold weather cycling gear isn’t complete without an insulated water system. Insulated hydration packs and bottles, along with strategically placing the reservoir tube under layers, help prevent freezing during long rides. We recommend the Hydrapak Velocity IT Hydration Reservoir. It keeps liquids from icing over, letting you stay hydrated even in sub-zero conditions.

5. Fat Bike Lights and Safety Reflectors (Front and Rear)

Visibility is crucial, especially on dark winter trails. Having powerful front and rear lights not only prevents accidents, but helps you spot obstacles before they become hazards. Choosing lights with long battery life or USB rechargeability ensures you won’t be left in the dark. To this end, consider the Fusion Drive Pro 600+/Strip Drive 300+ Light Set. This set will allow you to remain visible from all angles, improving safety during low-light rides.

6. Frame or Handlebar Bags

Carrying gear without the bulk of a backpack makes riding easier. Fat bike bags and storage solutions keep essentials within reach while maintaining a balanced and aerodynamic setup. Handlebar bags are ideal for quick-access items like gloves and maps, while frame bags keep weight centred for better handling. In this latter category, we’ve got the Osprey Escapist Frame Large Bag. It boasts secure storage for snacks, tools, extra layers, and anything in between.

Fat bike maintenance tools like this are essential for long rides, allowing you to handle minor repairs without cutting your adventure short. A spare tube and tire patches add extra security, especially in particularly remote areas.

8. Cold-Weather Cycling Gloves

Cold fingers ruin rides—full stop. That’s why protective gear for fat biking should always include gloves that boast a solid mix of both insulation and breathability. This allows you to prevent painful frostbite while maintaining dexterity. For unparalleled insulation, wind protection, and responsive grip, check out the Castelli Men’s Estremo Gloves.

9. Protective Gear (Helmet and Goggles)

A proper helmet and eye protection are non-negotiable on the trail. The Smith Optics Survey MIPS Helmet with ChromaPop Photochromic Goggles shields against harsh elements while enhancing vision in changing light conditions. Fat biking often means battling snow glare and sudden weather shifts. Having the right protection keeps you focused on the trail. Full-face helmets provide extra warmth and coverage for extreme cold and technical descents.

10. Layered Clothing System

Winter fat biking tips always stress layering. A mix of moisture-wicking thermals, windproof outer layers, and waterproof gear ensures warmth and flexibility. Choose breathable fabrics to stay dry while keeping the cold at bay. Overheating and sweating inevitably lead to rapid cooling, so layering properly helps regulate body temps for max comfort. A good rule of thumb: Start slightly cold—your body heat will quickly warm you up.

Final Thoughts

Fat biking is all about adventure, and the right fat bike gear essentials ensure every ride is smooth, warm, and safe. For the best experience, adjust your setup based on your riding style, terrain, and weather conditions. Additionally, investing a little more into high-quality fat bike accessories and components will not only enhance your performance, but keep you comfortable and protected in extreme conditions. For some riders, a bike computer can also provide an additional layer of enjoyment.

Whether you’re tackling fresh powder, icy paths, or rugged backcountry trails, being prepared is key. Stock up on the best fat biking accessories, stay safe, and enjoy the ride.

Cycling transcends mere transportation—it embodies a passion and a lifestyle. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or a novice, the right accessories can profoundly elevate your riding game. These accessories not only ensure your safety on the road but maximize comfort during extended rides.

This blog explores the essential items every cyclist should consider adding to their collection, from crucial safety gear to tools that enhance your efficiency and performance.

Cycling Accessories Must-Have

Getting the most out of cycling isn’t just about the bike, it’s about your bike accessories. Below, we discuss five key categories of cycling accessories.

Safety Accessories

Safety should always be priority numero uno. Investing in good quality safety accessories will protect you from potential hazards on the road and trail.

 • Helmet

Wearing a helmet drastically improves your odds of walking away from an accident. While a no-brainer for most cyclists, it’s important to choose a bike helmet that fits well and meets safety standards. For a deep dive into the best helmets, check out our dedicated articles on road biking helmets and mountain biking helmets.

 • Lights and Reflectors

Visibility is key to staying safe, especially in low-light or nighttime conditions. Front and rear lights, alongside reflectors, ensure that you’re seen by riders and drivers. Opt for high-quality, rechargeable lights with various modes to enhance your visibility. For a lightweight option with great battery life, check out the Lezyne Hecto Drive 500XL + Femto USB Light Set.

 • Bell or Horn

A bell or horn is a straightforward yet invaluable device for signalling pedestrians and other cyclists to your presence, enhancing safety in crowded areas and reducing the risk of accidents. Consider options like the Basil Noir Bell 60mm, which is both affordable and effective.

 • Protective Gear

Beyond a helmet, consider additional protective gear such as gloves, knee pads, and elbow pads. These items can protect you from scrapes and injuries during falls or accidents, providing an extra layer of safety.

Comfort Accessories

Comfort is key to enjoying your rides, especially on longer journeys.

 • Cycling Gloves

If you’ve ever gone for a long ride without gloves, you know how quickly your hands get sore. Cycling gloves are a game-changer, offering better grip and control while reducing hand strain. They also protect against blisters and absorb road vibrations. For their supportive grip and breathability, we recommend the Castelli Arenberg Gel 2 Gloves.

 • Padded Shorts and Bibs

Saddle soreness can turn a pleasant ride into a painful ordeal. That’s where padded shorts and bibs come in. The padding, or chamois, provides cushioning and minimizes friction. Trust me, investing in high-quality padded shorts made from moisture-wicking materials is worth every penny.

 • Cycling Shoes

Cycling shoes can take your pedalling efficiency to the next level. They’re designed to fit snugly and connect securely to your bike’s pedals, providing better power transfer and reducing foot fatigue. Look for shoes with good ventilation and stiff soles for the best results.

 • Cycling Sunglasses

Your eyes need protection from UV rays, wind, dust, and debris while cycling. Cycling sunglasses improve visibility and reduce glare, enhancing both safety and comfort. For a classic, stylish, and dependable choice, grab a pair of the Oakley Sutro Lite Sweep Sunglasses. Not your vibe? Check out our other best cycling sunglasses.

Performance Accessories

For cyclists looking to push their limits, performance accessories will help you track your progress and optimize your training.

 • Bike Computer

A bike computer is like having a coach on your handlebars. It tracks your speed, distance, and other vital stats. Seeing real-time data will motivate you to ride harder and smarter. An excellent, no-nonsense option with a large display is the CatEye Padrone Digital Cyclocomputer.

 • Heart Rate Monitor

Understanding your heart rate is key to optimizing your training. A heart rate monitor helps you stay in the right zone, whether you’re aiming for fat-burning, endurance, or peak performance. Pair it with your bike computer for seamless tracking.

 • Cycling GPS

A dedicated cycling GPS can be a lifesaver, especially on unfamiliar routes. It offers turn-by-turn navigation and can even reroute you if you take a wrong turn. Look for a model with a long battery life and easy-to-read display, such as the Garmin Edge 130 Plus Cyclometer GPS.

Maintenance Accessories

Having the right maintenance accessories on hand can save you from unexpected breakdowns and prolong your bike’s life.

 • Multi-tool

A good multi-tool is your go-to for on-the-road adjustments and minor repairs. It’ll save you from being stranded due to a loose bolt or a misaligned derailleur. Look for a multi-tool with Allen keys, a chain breaker, and screwdrivers to cover most basic repairs, like the Lezyne RAP II 25 CO2 Bicycle Multi-Tool.

 • Pump and CO2 Inflator

Flat tires are inevitable, but being prepared is a choice. A portable pump like the Lezyne Macro Floor Drive is essential for re-inflating your tire after a puncture. You might also consider carrying both a mini-pump and CO2 inflator. The mini-pump is reliable, while the CO2 inflator is perfect for a quick, hassle-free inflation when time is of the essence.

 • Patch Kit and Spare Tubes

A patch kit and spare tubes are lifesavers when you’re miles from home. Always carry at least one spare tube and a patch kit with reliable adhesive. It’s also a good idea to familiarize yourself with the patching process beforehand.

 • Chain Lubricant and Cleaner

Regular chain maintenance is key to a smooth ride. Applying chain lubricant reduces friction and wear, while a good cleaner helps remove grime and prolongs the life of your drivetrain. Opt for a lube that suits your typical riding conditions—wet or dry.

Storage & Convenience Accessories

These storage and convenience accessories will ensure you’ve got all you need within easy reach.

 • Saddle Bag

A convenient way to carry your essentials without weighing down your pockets—perfect for storing a multi-tool, patch kit, spare tube, and a few other small items. Look for a bag that’s compact yet spacious, and make sure it attaches sleek and securely to your bike frame, like the ORTLIEB Bike Frame-Pack 4L.

 • Hydration System

Staying hydrated is vital, especially on long rides. Whether you prefer water bottles or a hydration pack, having easy access to fluids will keep you going strong. For maximum convenience, a hydration pack lets you sip water without stopping. If you opt for bottles, ensure your bike has bottle cages that fit snugly and are easy to reach while riding.

 • Bike Lock

A solid bike lock is indispensable for protecting your bike against thieves. Look for one that’s lightweight but strong enough to deter criminals, such as the Kryptonite Kryptolok Combo U-Lock. Combo locks can be convenient, but make sure they’re secure.

 • Panniers and Racks

For those who commute or go on long-distance tours, panniers, and racks will feel revolutionary. They allow you to carry more gear without straining your back. Choose waterproof panniers to keep your belongings dry and secure.

 • Mudguard

Mudguards, or fenders, keep you clean and dry when riding in wet conditions. They might seem like a small addition, but they have a huge impact on comfort. Install a set to protect yourself from road spray and mud splashes.

Conclusion

Choosing the right accessories enhances every ride, from safety and comfort to performance and convenience. Tailor your gear to fit your riding style and enjoy smoother, safer adventures. Ready to level up?

The apparel you wear is essential to keeping you safe, focused and, most of all, having a blast on your bike.

Sporting a jersey used to mean awkwardly contorting yourself into a cramped and gaudy casing. But nowadays, kit designers use a blend of synthetic fibres engineered to be big on comfort. And let’s be real—today’s cycling apparel is as much a style statement as it is functional.

But the right clothing isn’t just about comfort or letting you look the part while sipping a post-ride coffee—it’s a critical component of your overall performance. We put together our dream team of cycling apparel brands—the ones we consistently reach for in our cycling wardrobe.

Top Cycling Clothing Brands

Attaquer

Founded in Sydney, Australia, Attaquer has become a standout name in cycling apparel for its bold style and innovative designs. The brand’s name, derived from the French word for “attack,” reflects its commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging conventional cycling fashion. Unlike traditional cycling gear, Attaquer’s vibrant colours and eye-catching patterns allow cyclists to express their individuality.

Attaquer’s men’s and women’s apparel is crafted from premium materials, ensuring top-notch performance and comfort. The brand offers a range of products, including jerseys, bib shorts, jackets, and accessories, all designed with features such as moisture-wicking fabrics, ergonomic fits, full-length zippers and reflective elements to lift the riding experience.

The Race Collection features high-performance, aerodynamic jerseys and bib shorts ideal for competitive cycling. The All Day Collection focuses on comfort and durability, perfect for long rides and everyday use. For gravel and bikepacking, the Adventure Collection provides robust and functional apparel, including extra pockets and reinforced seams. The A-Line Collection offers cyclists a blend of style and performance with sleek, elegant and minimalist designs.

Peppermint Cycling

It wasn’t that long ago that cycling was mostly a male-dominated sport. Peppermint emerged to disrupt this pattern with high-quality, stylish women’s apparel for road, gravel and mountain bike riding.

The Quebec-based brand designs its pieces from the ground up to fit the diverse body types of women cyclists. Its by-women, for-women approach is driven by the mantra that every woman deserves to feel comfortable and confident on a bike.

Peppermint’s range of jerseys include four distinct fits—Classic, Signature, Courage, and Gravel—that cater to a variety of riding styles from relaxed to race-ready. Its road and gravel bibs and shorts are made with a women-specific chamois pad to prioritize comfort on and off the bike.

Last year, Peppermint brought its apparel expertise to the trails with its first foray into mountain biking. The collection features women-focused details on moisture-wicking tops and bottoms, including jerseys, tanks, pants and shorts. And the pièce de résistance: the MTB Overall, a departure from your typical bike bottoms and a bold workwear statement on the trail.

Castelli

If you’re a cyclist, you’re likely familiar with Castelli and its iconic scorpion logo, one of the sport’s most recognized symbols. Castelli is among the most hallowed brands in cycling apparel, with a history going back to 1876 in the fashion capital of Milan, pioneering the skinsuit, the sublimated jersey and aerodynamic Lycra shorts.

Today, the Italian brand continues its tradition of innovation with products such as the game-changing Perfetto Jacket, a hybrid top that combines weather protection, breathability and aerodynamics.

Fans also love the Superleggera Jersey, an ultra-lightweight, moisture-repelling top with a no-sew seam around the sleeves and hem. Castelli’s Free Aero Race Bib Shorts are the best-selling product in the history of the company, featuring advanced chamois tech and refined materials that make a real difference on long rides. The recent collaboration between Castelli and Vallier also introduces the Aero RC Bib Shorts for men and women, blending both the elegance of Vallier’s urban styles with Castelli’s precise technical designs.

Vallier X Castelli maillot de vélo

Castelli consistently delivers high-performance gear that’s both stylish and comfortable. Plus, with team endorsements and a range of products for all kinds of weather, the brand has rightly earned a reputation for quality and reliability. Their sleek Italian style doesn’t hurt either, making it a favourite among both pros and casual riders.

Craft

Craft’s technical prowess is the stuff of legend. They essentially invented the base layer, and for over four decades, the Swedish brand has built a reputation for performance through its extensive portfolio of active sportswear.

Craft does an especially solid job in the cycling category, taking its R&D and proven fabric blends from other endurance sports and tailoring them specifically for time in the saddle. The result is cutting-edge design and high-performance fabrics for functionality on the bike.

The brand’s cycling apparel is engineered with lightweight and breathable materials, perfect for long rides on hot days. The range covers classic jerseys and bib shorts, including its Essence Jersey, designed with multiple fabrics for a stretchy and soft feel, excellent moisture transfer and enhanced ventilation to keep you cool.

POC’s cycling apparel combines minimalist design with advanced functionality and Scandinavian aesthetics. Their clothing line includes high-performance jerseys like the men’s and women’s Essential Road Jersey, made from breathable, moisture-wicking and recycled fabrics.

VPDS Bib shorts provide support and comfort with ergonomic designs and high-quality chamois. Lightweight, packable jackets and vests offer weather-resistant options that maintain breathability and freedom of movement.

POC is also coveted for its protective gear, including helmets that provide streamlined performance, superior ventilation and strike a balance between weight and safety. Technologies such as its patented breakaway peak (which will snap off the helmet in a fall, enhancing neck protection), plus the use of VPD for freedom of movement and a high level of protection, have made loyal fans out of its customers.

How to Choose Cycling Clothing

Cycling clothing has become more than just apparel, it’s a vital component of a good ride. Not only does it make you look and feel great, but it also plays a crucial role in enhancing your performance, comfort and style on your bike. Before you kit out your wardrobe, there are several factors to keep in mind.

Fit and Comfort

At the top for a reason, properly fitting clothing reduces chafing, improves aerodynamics and allows for a full range of motion. Look for gear that stays in place during intense rides and provides adequate ventilation, breathability, and proper-fitting chamois pads to reduce pressure points in the saddle.

Climate and Weather

Always consider the forecast; lightweight, breathable fabrics are ideal for hot weather, while insulated, windproof, and waterproof clothing will make your ride all the more enjoyable in colder, wetter conditions. Choose versatile layering options to ride out a day’s shifting forecast.

Style of Cycling

Consider your riding style and bike of choice: road, MTB, gravel, triathlon? Road cycling apparel maximizes speed and efficiency, with tight fits, reflective accents and chamois that are often slightly more padded than mountain biking chamois. Mountain biking gear emphasizes durability and protection with more relaxed cuts for flowy movement. Gravel kits blend functionality with durability to go the distance over varied terrain.

Your Own Personal Taste

There are as many designs, colours and patterns as there are bikes on the road and in the hills, so don’t be shy to express yourself. Balancing performance features with aesthetics gives you a boost of confidence on your bike.

You don’t have to be all matchy-matchy, but investing in quality cycling clothing means you get refined materials and innovative designs.

Conclusion

Top cycling clothing brands like Attaquer, Peppermint Cycling, Castelli, Craft, and POC stand out for their innovation, quality and style. Discover the perfect gear to suit your needs and tastes and then get out there on the road or the trails.

How to Choose a Mountain Biking Helmet

One of the most important things to consider when buying a mountain bike helmet is its ability to protect. We evaluated six different helmets, some with very innovative safety mechanisms and others based on traditional construction. Choose a helmet that meets your needs based on where you plan to ride and what kind of riding you plan on doing.

Mountain bike helmets have two main components: the shell and the interior construction. The outside shell is normally made of polycarbonate plastic, while the inside is often made of EPS foam. The exterior of a mountain bike helmet should be slightly harder than that of a road bike. Pay special attention to the thickness of the outer layer for maximum protection.

How to tell if the helmet is properly adjusted

The helmet should always fit snug, and that’s why the six models that we presented to you have precise adjustment systems. A helmet that moves over your head while riding will be likely to cause damage in the event of a fall or collision.

Security Standards

It’s best to opt for a helmet that offers increased protection on the sides and back of the head. If you fall on a bike path, these are the parts of the head that are most likely to be impacted.

Several mountain biking helmets have MIPS and SPIN technologies, both proven to significantly reduce the risk of brain damage. The outer shell is separated from the inner layer and pivots to absorb the shock in the event of a collision.

Ventilation

Always take ventilation into account when shopping for a mountain bike helmet – especially when cross-country riding. The best way to assess the ventilation of a helmet is with its openings on the top. Our best choice, the Smith Optics Forefront 2 MIPS, has more than one.

Other Considerations

The most important features in mountain biking helmets are ventilation, the weight of the helmet (which should be light) and protection. If your budget allows, choose a helmet with MIPS or SPIN technologies. It will give you increased protection in the event of a fall.

FAQ FOR MOUNTAIN BIKING HELMETS

Why do mountain biking helmets have visors?

The visor protects your eyes and face from the sun, but also from debris such as sand, dust, and branches.

How often should I change my mountain bike helmet?

A bicycle helmet does not have an expiration date, but it should be replaced after 5 to 10 years of use. It will also lose its effectiveness after any collisions or damage.

Can I use my mountain bike helmet for road cycling?

Mountain bike helmets have a visor while road bike helmets usually do not. The body position on a road bike is more advanced than on a mountain bike, so the visor may obstruct vision. For this reason, we recommend choosing a helmet for its specific use.

How are mountain bike helmets evaluated?

Downhill helmets go through rigorous testing on several types of terrain and trails.

Conclusion

We hope our buying guide makes it easier to choose one of the best mountain bike helmets for you. There are no specific rules to follow when shopping for a mountain bike helmet. Instead, choose one that has been designed specifically for your riding style and that fits your budget! If you’re still stumped, we recommend checking out our top choice, the Smith Optics Forefront 2 Helmet, which has superior technology and protection.

Reliable, high calibre, and offering superior protection for cyclists and other sports enthusiasts, this eyewear is a must-have for athletes and amateurs alike.

]]>

In 2019, Oakley released their first line of Sutro sunglasses to unanimously positive reviews. Since then, several variations have emerged, from simple lens changes to whole new models like the Sutro S and the Sutro Lite.

In this review, we discuss all the features that made the Sutros an instant classic in the activewear sunglasses category. We’ll also discuss whether these shades are right for your lifestyle and answer some commonly asked questions.

Let’s jump right in!

A Few Things to Consider before buying Oakley Sutro Sunglasses

Let’s not mince words here—Oakley Sutro sunglasses are expensive. But that doesn’t mean they’re not worth their salt. In fact, if you lead an active lifestyle and are in the market for a pair of sunglasses that can keep up, the Sutros definitely fit the bill.

Don’t get me wrong. They’re also great if you’re just really into 80’s synthwave, but you probably won’t get quite as much out of them.

The Sutros were designed with the explicit purpose of being the answer to cycling sunglasses. As we’ll see below, the Sutros offers cyclists a lightweight, durable, and comfortable option for both the trail and the road.

Our favourite Oakley Sutro sunglasses

Why Should You Consider the Oakley Sutro Sunglasses

Use Case

Whether you deliver UberEats on a fixie or barrel down rocky ridges on a mountain bike, the Sutros are for you. Their wrap-around design provides full-shield face coverage against sunlight and debris.

Construction

Where to begin? The Sutros are constructed entirely with proprietary materials, from the frames and the lenses down to the rubberized nose piece.

Frame

The frames are built with Oakley’s O Matter technology. This nylon-based material is known for being both lightweight and durable. In fact, O Matter is twice as strong as standard acetate frames, while also being 25% lighter.

Lenses

The specially formulated PRIZM lenses are crafted using specific dyes to accentuate some colours and dampen others. This creates sharp, high-contrast images that let you pick up on important cues while reducing visual noise.

In other words, you’ll have less trouble making out potential obstacles and small details, like a rapidly approaching pothole, fissure, or rock. Also, many wearers love the crisp, popping optics that the PRIZM lenses provide.

Depending on the lens type you go with, the contrast colours and intensity will vary. A high Visible Light Transmission (VLT) index means less filtration and more light penetrating the lens—exactly what you want in low-light and overcast conditions. Conversely, a low VLT index means more filtration and less light penetration. This is ideal for bright, sunny days or days with lots of glare.

The Sutros run the gamut when it comes to VLT indices. For instance, the PRIZM Road has a VLT of 20%, making it perfect for cloudy days where you need to see more of your surroundings. At the other end of the spectrum, we’ve got the PRIZM Black. These have a VLT of just 11%, meaning you wouldn’t even need to squint if you were staring at the sun from a stone’s throw away. (OK—I’m exaggerating a bit, but you get the idea.) Other options like the PRIZM Jade and PRIZM Sapphire offer middle-of-road VLTs.

Nosepiece

The Unobtainium saddle bridge excels both in terms of comfort and stability. This rubberized material sits comfortably on your nose and won’t slip down when wet. In fact, whether rain or sweat, the saddle bridge becomes stickier when wet, increasing its adhesion to your nose.

Style

What all the Sutros have in common is their retro-80’s chic. It’s certainly not a look everyone would rock but, if you dig it, the myriad of Sutro models ensures you’ll find something that suits your face shape. For those with flatter noses and high cheekbones, there’s even the Asian Fit Sutros

Of note, along either temple is an emblazoned Oakley logo in addition to some subtle geometric detailing. In terms of finish, the Sutros come in both matte and gloss.

Quality

Oakley is a brand renowned for its exceptional quality. Oakley glasses have been perfecting eyewear since the company was founded in 1975. Not only do they make casual and activewear sunglasses, their Standard Issue division is responsible for producing the official sunglasses used by the American military.

Even today, Oakley still manufactures up to 70% of their products in the US at their Foothill Ranch Headquarters in California. (Side note: their Headquarters is famous for its bizarre futuristic steampunk facade, among other things…)

Value

For every breed of cyclist out there, the Sutro sunglasses offer excellent value. It’s safe to say they’re one of the leaders in this category of eyewear. Plus, each purchase includes a drawstring nylon bag and a hard-shell carrying case to keep ‘em protected.

What do customers have to say?

We perused the annals of our product reviews to see what our customers had to say about the Oakley Sutro sunglasses. Regarding the Sutro Black Ink – Prizm Jade Iridium Lens Sunglasses, Teresa M. writes:

I bought these sunglasses for cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and winter running. The side arms fit nicely over a winter toque. The lens is excellent for good visualization of texture on the snow.

Meanwhile, regarding the Sutro Sunglasses – Matte Black – Prizm Trail Torch Lens, Oliver V. says:

A great product by Oakley. Prizm lens is top notch for clarity and contrast. My prizm trail lens are perfect for my early morning road and gravel rides and keeps the flies away from my eyes. One of the best looking cycling shades in my opinion. The fit is medium to large.

Things to know about the Oakley Sutro Sunglasses

Are Oakley Sutro sunglasses really worth it?

If you’re simply looking for a pair of sunglasses that look good, then Oakleys are an unnecessary expense. On the other hand, if you lead an active lifestyle and want something that’s both fashionable and functional, then yes—Oakleys are definitely worth it.

Oakleys come in a wide range of styles, so you won’t have any trouble finding a pair that suits you. Additionally, they’re made almost entirely with proprietary materials that ensure durability against sunrainsweat, and impacts. This lens technology translates to very good eye protection.

What's the difference between Sutro and Sutro S and Sutro Lite sunglasses?

Let’s first cover the similarities between the classic SutroSutro S, and Sutro Lite sunglasses. Across all three models, you’ll find the same wrap-around design and proprietary materials. This means the same level of protection against the elements, built with an O Matter frame, Unobtainium Saddle Bridge, and PRIZM lenses.

Now, onto the differences.

The Sutro S differs from the classic Sutro in only one regard—size. One of the distinguishing features of the Sutros is their sheer size. With the Sutro S, Oakley dialled it back a half-notch for people with smaller head shapes. Nevertheless, you still get full-shield face coverage with the Sutro S, since the curvature of the frames were reduced proportionally.

In terms of specs, the original Sutros are roughly a men’s L or women’s XL. The Sutro S, on the other hand, are about equivalent to a men’s S to M or women’s M to L.

Finally, the Sutro Lite sunglasses share the same dimensions with the classic Sutro. The difference here is in terms of function rather than construction. With the Lite, you get extra Unobtainium grip on the inside temples for added stability. Moreover, the absence of a bottom rim allows for better downwards visibility.

Are Oakley Sutro lenses interchangeable?

Yes, the Oakley Sutro lenses are interchangeable. This means you can swap out one lens style for another. Maybe you’re wondering what the point of this is. Is it purely aesthetics?

Actually, swapping out lenses can actually be very useful. For instance, if your lenses have a low VLT rating but you require a higher VLT index for an overcast ride. Also of note, Sutro lenses have prescription options.

For an easy-to-follow tutorial on how to change your lenses, check out this video.

Are Oakley sunglasses bulletproof?

I know—this sounds more like urban myth than fact. But, before we outright dismiss the question, there really is something to this.

While it’s a bit of a stretch to call them bulletproof, Oakley does manufacture military-grade sunglasses that are ballistic-rated. This doesn’t mean your lenses will stop an incoming bullet, but they are impact- and shatter-resistant against small fragments and projectiles.

How can you tell which models are the real deal? They’re inscribed with the code ANSI Z87.1-2015 certified, which meets the U.S. military ballistic eyewear standard (MIL-PRF-31013).

Oakley Sutro

Final Words on Our Oakley Sutro Sunglasses Review

The Oakley Sutro sunglasses are a cyclist’s dream, from urban cycling to mountain biking. Their full-shield face design stands up to elements like sun, wind, and rain, while the impact-resistant construction protects against projectiles like gravel and branches. They’re lightweight, thanks to the O Matter frame, and won’t sag while sitting on your sweaty nose, thanks to their Unobtainium nose piece

Lenses are interchangeable, which means you can quickly swap them out to better meet the needs of your adventure. Sure, they cost more than your average pair of sunglasses, but they also do a whole lot more. While Sutros are best geared (he he) towards cyclists, climbers, runners, and even tennis players can also benefit. And, as we saw from Tessa M’s review, they hold up nicely for winter sports, too.

We hope this Oakley Sutro review helped you to see how unique the Oakley Sutro glasses really are. Because there are so many options to choose from, we recommend checking out our Sutro product page to find the perfect shades for your next adventure. Don’t be surprised if you ended up with more than one pair!

In this article, we explore what distinguishes one type of bike helmet from another, the main features to look for in a bike helmet, how to determine its size, how to properly maintain it, and when to replace it. We’ll also discuss MIPS technology in some helmets, and national safety standards. Cyclists of all levels will benefit from this practical guide.

WHAT TYPE OF BICYCLE HELMET?

There are two main categories of bike helmets: road helmets Vs. mountain bike helmets. Generally speaking, they consist of a thin outer shell, a thick layer of expanded polystyrene foam (EPS foam) and chin strap to hold the helmet in place. The function of the foam inside the helmet is to compress and break down on impact to absorb the shock and distribute the forceaway from your skull.

In addition to these two disciplines, there are also some sub-categories such as urban helmets and children’s helmets.

ROAD BIKE HELMETS

The best road helmets are obviously safe when it comes to protecting you from a crash, but they also offer ventilation and aerodynamic properties. They are as light as possible, and their fit optimizes your comfort.

In recent years, road helmets have split into two specialized categories, much like frames and wheels, to meet specific needs: aerodynamic helmets and climbing helmets.

The design of the former is aimed at eliminating as much friction as possible to ride as fast as possible on the flat. The latter offer increased ventilation and reduced weight for optimal comfort during performance. Take the time to carefully consider which option best suits your sport of choice.

MOUNTAIN BIKE HELMETS

Mountain biking is more risky and, in the event of a fall, you’ll be glad you took the time to make the right mountain bike helmet choice. This is particularly true for brazen downhill mountain bikers!

The best mountain bikers’ helmets aim to provide the most comprehensive coverage possible. This is because impacts can result from a fall, a collision with an obstacle, or even just a low-hanging branch you failed to notice. In many cases, mountain bike helmets will also include a visor to protect your precious face.

Helmet sizing is an important facet of mountain bike helmets. For safety as well as comfort, you’ll want to make sure the bike helmet fit is absolutely perfect.

URBAN BIKE HELMETS

Cycling is not just a fun way to stay in shape—it’s an efficient means of transportation that has the power to positively transform your daily life. So, what should you look for when choosing a city bike helmet?

Well, in contrast to downhill mountain biking helmets, we can put aerodynamics and performance aside. Instead, we want to optimize comfort, safety, and yes—even style. After all, we’re talking about choosing a helmet that will be part of your everyday look for half the year!

In addition to comfort, a hard outer shell, and a snug fit, it’s worth considering options that boast good visibility. This will help you keep track of pedestrians, vehicles, and other cyclists bustling around you.

CHILDREN’S HELMETS

In addition to being attractive colored and patterned, kids helmets boast a few key differences to their adult counterparts. Not only are helmets for kids smaller, they’re designed to properly contour the unique head shape of children.

When choosing a child’s helmet, it is important to find a model that fits the child’s head properly. The helmet should fit snugly, but not too tightly, and should sit flat on the child’s head without tipping or sliding. EPS foam in-mold bike helmets with a hard outer shell are a great option.

ELECTRIC BICYCLE HELMETS

Electrically assisted bicycles are becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason. For one thing, E-bikes allow you to carry more weight, including groceries and children. For another, they let you get to work faster and arrive less sweaty. But is there anything special to note about e-bike helmets?

Not really, actually. Regular bike helmets are more than enough to protect the electrified cyclist. In fact, due to the higher speeds attained on an e-bike, a high-quality helmet is arguably more important, especially for a less experienced casual rider.

KEY FEATURES TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A BIKE HELMET

There are many factors to consider when choosing a helmet, starting with the daunting standards and certifications (CPSC, ASTM, MIPS, etc.), which we will demystify here. You’ll want to pay attention to bike helmet fit and comfort, good ventilation and breathability, maximum protection, and a sun-shielding visor.

SAFETY STANDARDS, CERTIFICATIONS, AND TECHNOLOGIES

The acronyms CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) and ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) represent the entities responsible for certifying that bicycle helmets meet satisfactory safety requirements.

In Canada, the standard in place is CSA (Canadian Standards Association). While all bike helmets sold in the U.S. must be certified, Canadian legislation does not require manufacturers to comply with CSA requirements.

You’ll therefore want to make sure that the helmet you choose is approved by the American CPSC, which has become the reference for bicycle helmet certification in Canada, as well.

The most talked about designation in recent years is MIPS technology, which stands for Multi-Directional Impact Protection System. Its main function is to reduce the rotational forces and rotational energy caused by certain impacts to the helmet shell.

This sophisticated impact protection system was developed by brain surgeons and scientists, and has proven to be effective in reducing brain damage caused by blunt-force impacts to the head—forces strongly correlated with the risk of a concussion.

A new bike helmet without this technology is still safe, but wearing a helmet with MIPS technology will have a drastic and positive effect on safety performance. And it’s no longer just reserved for high-end helmets; MIPS is now a standard part of most bike helmet construction, making it accessible to every type of rider.

FIT AND COMFORT

When it comes to choosing a bike helmet, your top priority is that it fits properly. Beyond the comfort and safety aspects, the way a helmet fits will help you choose the right size bike helmet. Luckily, bike helmet fit systems have come a long way. Here are a few tips to sizing up.

 • Step 1 – First, there are the removable pads inside the helmet. These removable pads are used to customize the fit of the helmet and provide ample protection against impacts. They are usually VELCRO, allowing you to adjust them to your needs or swap them out for thicker or thinner varieties.
 • Step 2 – Now it’s on to the helmet chin strap. Make sure it’s not twisted, and that it fits in the right place in the internal structure of the helmet, as indicated by the manufacturer. A chin strap buckled should feel snug but not tight.
 • Step 3 – Time to adjust the helmet’s head size, using the adjustment wheel knob on the rear of the headband. The adjustment wheel is also sometimes found on top of the helmet at the back. The headband should be tight enough that the helmet does not fall off the head when you lean forward with the straps untied.
 • Step 4 – We are now ready to adjust the straps of the bike helmet. These are adjusted under the ears, so that they sit as flat as possible along the face. Then, adjust under the chin. The straps don’t have to be very tight, as the helmet should be held in place by the headband. As a test, insert two fingers easily between your chin and the straps.
 • Step 5 – Finally, it’s important to make sure that the bike helmet sits straight on the head: not too far forward, not too far back, and not leaning to one side or the other. In addition to a visual check in a mirror, you should also verify that there’s only a finger’s width of space between the eyebrows and the tip of the bike helmet.

VENTILATION AND BREATHABILITY

A helmet design with more openings allows for better airflow and breathability on your head. While this ensures optimal comfort, it comes at the cost of aerodynamics.

The best designed bike helmets will offer a balance between these two factors. Keep in mind, however, that the sacrifice in performance is minimal and will not affect the vast majority of cyclists, who are better off with a more ventilated and comfortable helmet. Therefore, for the casual rider, a good bike helmet features ventilation over aerodynamics.

BIKE HELMET VISORS

A visor protects your face and eyes from both the sun’s rays and from pouring rain. Visors are almost always found on a mountain bike helmet, as they protect your face from branches, leaves, and other debris that may be on the trail.

Keep in mind that not all visors are interchangeable or removable.

THE MOST POPULAR BIKE HELMET BRANDS

To help guide your search, here’s a list of the best-known and most trusted helmet brands on the market:

HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HEAD TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT HELMET SIZE

Using a soft measuring tape, measure the circumference of your head, circling 2.5 centimeters (~1”) above the eyebrows in the front, and directly over the bump behind the skull in the back.

If you don’t have a flexible tape measure, you can use a piece of string and then use your finger to measure it flat.

WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR HELMET?

Unequivocally and always after a fall. All hard shell bike helmets should be replaced immediately after the first significant impact, as its protection is likely to be compromised even in the absence of noticeable damage; it may not be visible, but it is just as real.

Second, although the existence of an expiration date for a new helmet that has never been impacted is disputed, manufacturers generally recommend replacing a helmet after three to five years of use. This is based on the idea that weather, heat, cold, and sweat will have worn down its material composition.

BICYCLE HELMET MAINTENANCE

Bike helmet care is very simple. First, clean it with water and a small amount of mild soap. Never use harsh cleaning products such as bleach, as it could damage the materials that make the helmet safe.

Next, make sure to store your helmet in a cool, dry place. Avoid exposing it to excessive heat; for example, by leaving it in the trunk of your car, as this could also affect its ability to properly absorb shocks.
